How steep can you winch a Land Rover?

Orawa 4×4 Challenge is a very technical offroading competition, consisting mostly of steep gulleys that the contestants need to winch themselves through.

The goal is to get a stamp in your roadbook, which is securely attached to the co-pilot’s door mirror. The little stamps are attached to a tricky spot, normally between 5 and 15 metres up a near-vertical slope, halfway up a tree…!

The 2-day competition demands very technical driving and extreme winching, which left the Rookies feeling rather bewilderd at times, much to the amusement of the Polish crowd – which, with their plentiful advice and suggestions, looked as if they’ve been doing this since they were 6!


How steep can you winch?

Our adventure demanded a crushing schedule:

  • Friday – 1300 km’s in one day with trailers loaded with competition cars (max. 90 km/h)
  • Saturday – Day 1 of the trial (start 7 am and drive till you can’t no more…)
  • Sunday – Day 2 of the trial (start 7 am and try to make the finish…)
  • Monday – head back to Holland: 1300 km’s

Come to think of it – are we mad?
